Since I have been working with Target as a resident blogger over the last few months, I am frequently in store checking out product.
A few months ago, I came across the Giaan by Spalding range – which is A M A Z I N G.
I thought I would ask Giaan what she has been up to since her days in the pool and how the collaboration with Spalding and Target came about.
You have been a very busy bee since retiring from swimming in 2006. Can you fill us in on what you have been up to?
I have been very fortunate that after retiring at 23, I jumped straight into my next career path; media!
I had a ball working for Channel 9 for 7 years which included shows like Getaway, Postcards, Wide World of Sports, 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics as well as swimming commentary. I very quickly realised that I got the same adrenaline rush doing live TV as I did lining up behind the blocks before a swimming race!
For the last 3 years I have worked for Channel 7 and learnt a few new skills including presenting the weather, and working at the Australian Open tennis, with a trip to Rio for next year’s Olympics already planned!
I have also been very fortunate to work with some fabulous companies over the years which keeps me busy outside of my TV commitments.
How has life changed since Zander was born?
I never properly understood how having a child changes your world entirely but it certainly does and has.
I love being a Mum but raising my cheeky little boy has definitely been the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, luckily it’s worth it.
Did you ever see yourself being a television presenter?
I had always loved reading & writing at school so thought I would possible go down the Sport’s Journalism path but I just happened to be in the right place at the right time when I retired from Swimming, and found myself in front of the camera, not behind!
How do you find time to do it all?
I have busy times and not so busy times, so I just try to time manage the best I can when things are chaotic and enjoy the down time when it is quiet.
I am very fortunate that I can, to some degree, work around Zander so the schedule is heavy on daycare days.
But that means I get the best of both worlds, quality time with him and time for me to enjoy my job.
As my husband Sam also travels for work, we really try to keep weekends as sacred family time, so the balance works quite well…..for now!
You now have an activewear line with Target, how did that come about?
I am so humbled by the opportunity to design activewear for Women!
It was a very organic process that saw Spalding (the manafacturer), Target and myself come together to create the ‘Giaan by Spalding for Target’ range, and I am as ‘hands on’ as possible.
Who are your pieces designed for?
The Target woman demands a lot from her activewear, we are ‘maxi taskers’ not just multi taskers!
So we range from a size 8-18, with pieces that are designed to flatter all shapes and sizes at an affordable price point, that doesn’t scrimp on quality.
That was my non negotiable: the quality has to be top notch.
And considering that these days, we wear our activewear to not only the gym or a yoga class, but to the supermarket, to pick up the kids from school and to have coffee with the girls, it needs to look good too!
Where do you draw inspiration from for your line?
I usually start with colour, and will find palettes in a fabric, a piece of art, or from high fashion looks on the runway, then go looking for a pattern that complements the colour palette.
From there we turn our attention to playing with silhouettes that are comfortable, functional and fashionable.
I honestly believe that if you feel good in your activewear, then you are more motivated to exercise, and once you exercise, you are going to look even better in your activewear!!!
What are your top 3 pieces from your collection that every woman must have?
We all need a great pair of tights and our range always offer a few different options, but I keep the waistbands a little higher (to provide support around the middle) and place strategic stitching to either disguise or accentuate depending on the body part.
In this collection, I am loving the 3/4 Pocket Tight which is available in 2 colour ways and retails for $35.
A little pocket on the thigh means you can keep a key or coins on you while exercising, and an internal pocket on the front waistband fits your phone.
I team these tights with a top from the low performance range, I’m particularly loving the Tie Up Tank, as you can wear it undone or done up depending on your mood, so 2 looks for $29.
As my 3rd item, I can’t go past a pair of our Harem pants.
We do a 3/4 length in the warmer months and a full length for the winter collections and they are always popular, people tell me they only take them off to wash them.
Our 3/4 length in this collection is available in 2 colour options and retail for $35.
Who would you love to see wearing Giaan by Spalding?
I get such a rush seeing women wearing and enjoying the range, but I would love to see a mother & daughter both wearing the range, that way we have ticked the boxes for 2 very different customers.
Can we have a sneak peek of what’s to come?
We are moving into a bit of a blue, snakeskin look for the next range before the palette becomes a bit moodier heading into autumn.
But before that, there might be a small swimwear collection coming in December…
Have you seen Giaan’s line in Target? What’s your favourite piece?
