Yesterday I was shopping with a young client who is about to step out into the working world.
When we were shopping, I mentioned that an LBD (Little Black Dress) was a must.
The LBD is a wardrobe essential for so many reasons.
The first, it doesn’t date. It is a classic piece that you will get many years out of. My first ever LBD is still in my wardrobe and it is around 8 years old.
When you put it on, you are ready for action. I don’t about you but as soon as I put any LBD on, I feel a sense of powerfulness and I am ready to tackle whatever comes my way.
The amount of combinations that you can create with it is limitless.
- Wear it with a coat (a colourful one will pop)
- Style it with a metal belt
- Accessorise with a statement piece – brooch or necklace
- Add patterned tights
- Try it with this season’s bomber trend
- Layer a white shirt underneath it
- Team it with sneakers for a Sports Lux look
- Wear a blouse over the top to look make it look like you are wearing a top and skirt
I could keep going, but I’m going to stop here for now. If you have a different way that you wear yours, I would love for you to add it below.
And lastly, the LBD can easily take you from the boardroom to the dancefloor. Enough said.
So now you know how to wear it, but what type of LBD suits you?
Now we I can LBD don’t think that I am talking about one style or cut that is for everyone.
Depending on our body shape, each of us needs different features from our Little Black Dress.
I know some of you are probably thinking that you need to spend a fortune on an LBD but this is certainly not the case.
For each body shape, I’ll show you where you can save or splurge.
If you are an hourglass, look for a dress that will accentuate your waist and curves with a tie waist detail or belt. A fitted or wrap style looks great on you.
For inverted triangles (like myself), steer clear of LBDs that have shoulder pads, thin straps or a boat neckline. Similar to the hourglass, bring the focus on to the waistline and accentuate curves on the bottom half by adding fullness to create balance.
For those of you who are an oval shape, you want to create angles and diagonal lines across the body with deep V necklines and asymmetrical hemlines. Look for semi fitted, ruched or draped silhouettes, soft cowl/wider necklines and empire line or wrap dresses.
When it comes to finding the right LBD for all of you triangle girls, look for a dress that will open up your upper body and décolletage wider or deeper necklines. Put emphasise onto your waist and arms. Define your waist without adding too much fullness in the skirt shape.Seed Dress
And last but not least it’s the rectangle LBD. Opt for a dress that will give the illusion of curves with draped fabric and shaped silhouettes including flowing or asymmetrical hemlines. Avoid boxy shapes, straight or square lines.
So there you have it. My top LBD picks.
Which one id your favourite? Have you already got your perfect LBD?
